Aloha friend! I’m Katy—
Registered nurse, Yoga Teacher, & Somatic Educator
.

i believe that the importance of movement goes far beyond the physical body.

Personal experience with chronic migraine and autoimmunity + professional experience in hospice and end-of-life care eventually led me to a deep inquiry into nervous system regulation, movement, and the impact of emotions, stress, grief, and trauma on overall wellbeing.  Now, I combine my love for yoga and other somatic movement practices with knowledge of the latest neuroscience, focusing on the importance of tending to the nervous system and allowing stress and emotions to move through the body.

I live on the beautiful island of Maui, Hawai’i with my partner, Shannon, and our rescue pets, Charlie (poi dog), Koi (calico cat), and Bobbie (tabby cat). When I’m not practicing yoga, I can be found surfing, dancing, and hiking.

My Yoga Teaching Philosophy

Yoga is much more than physical postures (asana).

Yoga it is a way of being in the world that cultivates harmony between the mind, body, and spirit.  Asana is just one of the eight components of yoga.

You have the freedom to choose what is best for you and your body.

You can choose to opt in or out of any practices during class.  Options might be offered, but always choose what is best for you.  You know yourself and your body best.

How you feel in a pose is more important than how you look.

Each person is unique with varying levels of flexibility, strength, anatomical/physiologic factors, and past injuries/limitations.  There is no single “perfect” or full expression of an asana.

Yoga is for all bodies.

Yoga is for you no matter your age, gender, shape, size, or ability.  If you can breathe, you can practice yoga

My Movement Journey

My parents owned a martial arts dojo, so naturally I grew up practicing martial arts from the time that I was a toddler and thus my lifelong love of movement began.  I developed a desire to study human health from a broader prospective, so I pursued nursing in undergraduate and graduate school— but my fascination of movement specifically never went away.  Shortly after I became a Registered Nurse, I qualified with the American College of Sports Medicine as an Exercise Physiologist.  Over the years, I trained in a broad variety of fitness and movement methodologies, including group fitness, yoga, Crossfit, and Movnat.

Although I have been a yoga practitioner since I was 16-years-old, it wasn’t until I started learning about the connection of stress, trauma, and nervous system dysregulation with chronic pain that I came to truly understand the power of yoga as a therapeutic modality.  My yoga mat became my place of refuge as I began to explore the connections between the sensations in my physical body, the thoughts in my mind, the emotions in my heart, and my relationship with myself and others.

These experiences led me to seek additional training in yoga, somatics, trauma, grief and loss, mindbody medicine, polyvagal theory, the fascia system, chronic pain, and neuroscience. There are many teachers that have greatly influenced my current practice, including Marylene Henry, Wendy Black Stern, Nityda Gessel, Dr. Howard Schubiner, Jill Miller, Julie Martin, and Dr. Arielle Schwartz.
